Antwerp is my favorite city in Belgium. And since a couple off months I live here.
The place is always alive. It has a great cultural history, but also nowadays you'll find a large art scene. There is indeed a reason why the magazine Vogue called Antwerp the hippest town in the world. Think in the first place about the numorous fashiondesigners comming from Antwerp: Dirk Bikkemberghs, Ann Demeulemeester, Walter Van Beirendonck, Raf Simons, Dries van Noten,... They all have their stores in Antwerp. The fashionschool here is among the most prestigeous ones. Momu (fashionmuseum) presents interresting exhibitions about fashion.
As everyone knows Antwerp is the place to be for daimonds and jewelry. A lott of joung goldsmiths and jeweldesigners have found their place in the old center of the city. And around the Central station you can find the daimondcenter of Antwerp. But be aware from fakes in this area. The real thing is much hidden from regular people. Go to the daimondmuseum next to the zoo. They show you the hole story of the daimond from rough stone to jewel and might provide you with good shopping tips where to buy the real thing.
Antwerp counts numerous monuments all over the city with the cityhall and the cathedral as the highlights. Just take a strol around and keep your eyes open. You'l be amazed what you'll find. On every corner or square you can discover an interesting statue, beautiful house or just a cosy place to sit down and enjoy.
On my Antwerp pages I give some tips on the big and small places in Antwerp. I would like it verry much if you go a bit further than the regular stuff , because Antwerp is so much more that the cathedral and cityhall. The small streets and squares are really a treasure of the real Antwerp atmosphere. Have fun discovering the city on the river Schelde. |
