Land of Beauty and pain. | 2 of the 3 volcanos on the lake. |
Lake Atitlan is a UNESCO world heritage site for good reason. It is very beautiful. Unfortunately there is a lot of pain buried under the surface. Even as recently as 10 years ago the villages were fighting and killing each other.
There are several different villages around the lake with their own languages. Each one has its own beauty and reason for visiting. When visiting the local market we saw very clearly the different colors of the individual villages.
Just last fall in 2005 hurricane Stan came through and buried hundreds of people under landslides and destroyed homes, churches and almost one whole village. People all around the lake are busy rebuilding thanks to the aid sent from many countries around the world. |
|  | Panajachel still rebuilding A big chunk of this city is in lake Atitlan now. Fortunately there was still a lot that was spared so the economy is healthy and they will do fine. |
