Get to this heaven!!!

by schlumpf - last update: Jan 5, 2005

The great Moque
The first impact I had in this amazing city was something that blowes my mind up! Really, it impressed me so much, in such a tender and lovable way!!!!

….When I got to the hotel, I decided to go immediately to the old part of the city, better known as “Medina”…

The Medina is such an amazing part of the city, I’d say, the best part in absolute, full of contrasts and character, it showes you the real face of Tunisia, arab style!

…Well, at a certain point it starts raining, such a huge rains and I was, clearly, without the rainbow…and I am not speaking any French!!!

..I was seeking for a taxi but there was none free .…and the hotel was something like 5K far away…it was so bad! Then, at a certain point came two young girls (abt 18/20 yrs old) and I tried to speak to them in English, but there was no way, only Arab!

..I do not know how they could understand me, but they stopped a car, jump on it, and with the hand they told me to drop in!!! They brought me to the hotel….Wow!! Such a gentle people!! Lovable people!!!

…Again, I was walking trough the main street searching for some sigarettes, and then there were two guys…I just ask for the cigarettes and then they started to talking to me…and said…”well, we will bring you to by some sigarettes…” Till here nothing especially wrong…

During the way we start talking about whatsoever, and when we got to the shop, they paid my sigarettes!! “Consider it as a welcome, he says”…com’on!!!! That’s simply unbelievable!!!

That is what will always stay into my brain, the courtesy of this population (and not only for those situations as I’d have lots of examples to say …)
Luca Smoking!!
There are a lot of things to see in Tunis and also around the capital, i.e. Carthage, Sidi Bou Said, Sousse, Hammamet (all between 20K/150K) but I’d suggest you to rest for at least a couple of days in the capital, smelling their tipical arab style…

Just to begin, smoke their Chicha in a tipical “Tea house” with such a nice mint tea!!!!
The market @ the Medina
Another amazing and really easy going activity that could be done in Tunis and all over Tunisia, is to hang around the market, usually in the Medina part.

It could also be consider a Tourist Trap, but if you just want to hang around and watch the people, well….it is ok!

…. But if you want to buy stuff then be prepared!!!! Is not like India, but here the prices are so high…Whatever price they are telling you, then apply for the 30% maximum! If they says no, no problem at all, walk away, they will stop you!

…So…… bargain bargain and bargain again

Great tips, seems a nice destination. Restaurants tips sound great. About money, same thing happen with me in Maldives, they refuse to accept local currency at airport, only USD or Euro. Cheers!
