The famous capital of Inca's empire

by schlumpf - last update: Nov 7, 2004

Maybe the most knows city of Peru, Cusco, the famous capital of Inca's empire, keep his historical culture and look.

The city itself, is just "the top of an inceberg", as around the area, called "sacred valley" there are a lot of important sites that must be visited, i.e. Sacsayhuamàn, Qenko, Puca Pucara, Tambo Machai, Ollaytatambo, Pisac, Chincero and the world' famous lost city of Macchu Picchu.

Some of them are really very closed to Cusco city, other, i.e. Macchu Picchu, Ollaytatambo are quiet far (abt 30/40Km, so you better organize a day' excursion to this sites).

The heart of Cusco is as usual Plaza the Armas, a very clean and beautifull square in the mittle of the city, altought immediately on the right side arise a commercial street called "Avenida del Sol" fullfilled of shops, travel agency, tourist traps, restaurant and so on, that puts down the value of the location.

If you are seeking for cheap accomodation, you just need to take the street fromPalza de Armas that goes on the highest part of the city, caleld "BArrio San Cristobal". There are thousand of possibilities there.

To visit the sites around the city, you gotta pay the entrance fee. It would be better to buy the "boletto turistico" an entry fee pass that costs you 10 USD that allow you to visit near all the sites of interests (you can buy it in every site).

For further details, just check my tips!

Enjoy...
Barrio San Cristobal
Keep in mind that Cusco is pretty high (abt 3.320 meters high), so, depending on where you are coming from, you need to acclimate your body at this alitudes.

Cusco-my favorite Peruvian city. If you go back go during Halloween. They have a fireworks display that is more awesome than Times Square New York on New Years Eve!!
