"Wellcome to the holy city of Varanasi" Varanasi by schlumpf

Varanasi Travel Guide: 619 reviews and 1,429 photos

When somebody is travelling throug the North part of India, Varanasi has to be the main MUST place to visit.

The contrasts beetween the other places in the north part of India are so self evident; Varanasi is the “real” indian city, as per my expetations, at least...

What to expect?! A river of people walking trough such a small streets ( lenght not big then 2 meters!), cowes wherever, naked kids that follow you for kilometers, Shadu, (the holy man) that walk trough Varanasi’s streets almoust naked, the mother a.k.a. the Gange, people that stress you trying to sell you whatever, as well as to take you to the Gange ...

Varanasi is a very spiritual place, where you can be impressed in two ways: or so deep impressed, or so bad impressed. There will be none possibility that you will leave Varanasi without a very strong feeling, whatever it would be, such a beautifull and deep one, or such a bad one!

As said, Varanasi is the holiest city in India, and you will detect it in a lot of activities, from simply walking trough his streets with all those people walking so quietly with Shadu and kids, in his crowded market in the old part of the city, from the mother Gange, from the beautifull (altough just a bit too touristic) hindu cerimony on the Gange during the evenings, from the burning temples and other few hindu temples.

Here you will see the way of seeing the sacrality of the life and the death, indeed in Varanasi there is the biggest “burning temple” where people are burned 24/7 and you will be able to see the fog all over the sky.

There will be a real opportunity to see death people on the streets side, and this is actually not a great view (as it happends to me!), and moreover, everyone will insist to bring you to the burning temple and in the temple beside it, where people are waiting in peace the death...another very strong feeling!

The percentuage of umidity, pollusions, traffic, durty stuff on the street side, is something you could never be prepared to get! Altough you will read a lot, you will never be prepared ...Varanasi will surprise you ! Definititely...

There are a lot of activities to do in Varanasi, and it could be considered the city number one for the backpackers...check my tips out....

Everything we gotta do is respect their culture!!!!!

The burning temple, as said before is the main holy temple in Varanasi, where death people are burned 24/7 and then put in the Gange, the mother.
Acutally the pollusion percentuage in Varanasi is something over every thought...keep your head up!

A trip with a boat in the Gange is an activity that has not to be missed once in Varanasi, altough is going to became a tourist trap. In this way, you will be able to see every activity that is done on the Gange side, (and are a lot!).
Is pretty amazing to caugh a boat at 5.30 am and see the sunshine on the Gange from the boat...amaaaaaaaaaaaaaazing!

Awesome Varnanasi pictures. Do not see one of you bathing in the Ganges like your Amazon picture.
