TAHAA

by Sedna - last update: Sep 10, 2004

Experience Raiatea’s sister island of Tahaa with its local legends, pearl farms and vanilla plantations.

WHAT YOU VISIT
Black Pearl Farm - Tour a family-run pearl farm and learn how islanders practice the grafting and culturing of pearls in Pacific oysters.

Vanilla Plantation - Smell the plantation’s perfumed air; see climbing orchids that produce vanilla pods, and learn how vanilla is cultivated and processed.

Hiro Birthplace - Born around 1490 on Tahaa, Hiro is known throughout Polynesia for navigating to the distant islands of Hawaii and New Zealand using only the stars as a guide. The site where his parents met, and his birthplace, is today marked by but a few stones - and many legends.

PHOTO OPPORTUNITY
Haamene - This scenic overlook offers fantastic views over much of the island.

SHOPPING
At the black pearl farm, you have the opportunity to purchase pearl jewelry and other products of the pearl farm.

WHAT YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY
Transfer by boat across the beautiful lagoon to Tiva on the island of Tahaa. Travel by local Le Truck along the island’s only inland road and drive to an observation point with panoramic views of the island. Venture down the mountain with a stop at the birthplace of Hiro and a vanilla plantation. Follow the coast until you reach the pearl farm, where you transfer back to Raiatea.

SPECIAL NOTES
Transport on Tahaa is by non-air conditioned Le Trucks with bench-type seating.
