WELCOME in SOLLIES-TOUCAS!

by Jes76 - last update: Feb 11, 2004

Hello! I live in Sollies-Toucas, a small village on the "Côte d'Azur". Send me email if you want tips about Toulon - Hyeres region.

La Place de l'Eglise

Towards the end of the 15th century, two brothers, Merino born in 1476 and Bernardus born in 1486, sons of Louis TOCASSO, left Diano Marino, their native village located in the district of Porto Maurizio in Liguria (Italy), to go to be established in Provence. The territory of Solliès was then managed by the Louis lord of FORBIN. The borough of Solliès (currently Solliès-ville) undoubtedly appeared welcoming to the two brothers since they decided to stay.

L'école Primaire

In the first years of the 16th century, the two brothers left Solliès to come to settle in the valley and to build the first house there of what was to become the hamlet of Toucas. This one was built close to a significant source which one currently names "Fontaine du thon". Thereafter, their descendants moved towards the current place of our village. The first houses which were built there locate in the block between the way of Valaury, the place Gambetta, the streets of the vault, Costes and Guiran.

Les ruelles

It is only into 1799 that the commune, which depended on Solliès-Ville, became autonomous and that the borough of Toucas took the name of Solliès-Toucas and had its first mayor. The name of TOCASSO was francized during years. One removed initially O final to replace it by an E, then one added U between the second and third letter. Finally, at the beginning of the 17th century one removed an S to arrive at the current name of TOUCAS. There was at that time, in the borough, many families which carried the patronym of TOUCAS, all downward of the two brothers.

Les bords du Gapeau

Because of its limpid water, the Greeks established on the territory of Solliès would have devoted the area to Venus, the goddess of the beauty and would have built a temple for the Sun. This temple seems to be related to an observation which, with the winter solstice, saw the sun disappearing and reappearing behind the hill of Défens, projecting its shade twice on the valley. Phenomenon of illusion which seemed to let see two suns. ("Solliès"="Soles Legati": linked suns)

L'église Saint-Christophe

Built on the site of the primitive vault, it goes back to 1701. The principal entry, located on the Gambetta place, is surmounted by a pediment carrying a Latin inscription engraved in the stone which gives place to several interpretations. At the interior, one can admire a beautiful retable out of gilded wooden going back to 1704, registered with the inventory of the historic buildings in 1984.
