True or Flashy
With heels of three great leaders, this ancient country has rapidly become prosperous by opening its door to the world. Is the prosperity solid or flashy? What is the mystery of this ancient nation? What does it look like in your mind?
After viewing many VTers' page about China(most describe it as a wonderful place), it is probably the time to rectify some of the thoughts and opinions towards the country. As a native Chinese, I hope my comment can bring you a neutral understanding to this country, rather than just knowing it from its appearance or from what the media says in your country.
The translation depicts the Chinese writing on the above caricature.
Right: Walk our own path, Left: Make the advance of the world class. Top: Development is the solid truth.

The Pandora ’s Box still release its malefic power You must be wondering why there are so many Con’s and Pro’s(see the travelogue first) about China in a harsh contrast. As VTers travel around the world and learn different history and culture from places visited, do you ever wonder for what reason made China became the most complicate one in the world?
Through a brief telling, hope it helps you understand China in a better way.
Western capitalism opened up the door of ancient China(dominated by feudal system still) by initially bringing the western culture (but with opium) over 100 years ago. As an enlightment of democracy, to abandon the fatuous traditions and to seek the light of a civilized and democratic society made many country fighters devoted their career and life into it. But none of them was succeed. From the ceaseless fightings and wars, the Communist Party took the possession of this land from the Republican (whom governed Taiwan later) after the WWII. During the period of their domination about 30 years, there were many ridiculous events happened but the inviolability of the Communist gave the brainwash to Chinese people. Finally, the disaster happened to this country – The Culture Revolution of 10 years.
As a child born in the last year of this revolution period, I feel very fortune for not experiencing anything. But my knowledge to this historical event was also very limited due to the media block by the government. With a steady open-up to the world and a more freedom given to the local media, the truth underneath becomes clear to me, eventually generating a dominating opinion after the backpack travel to SE Asia. It was a horrible disaster, which thoroughly destroyed the culture, tradition and history of China. Thousands of liberty were sent to jail, persecuted, injured and even died. With the ridiculous call-off of Chairman Mao that “No broke, No built-up”, thousand years of history became utterly worthless in front of the fanatical country. Many antiquity and relic of history were destroyed. Nescience and pure proletariat became as a proud of a family. Many youth fanatically idolized Chairman Mao and swarmed to Beijing in order to show their loyalty by giving up th education. I can’t imagine the heat brought to the country during that period, but through the story-telling in pieces from my parents, I got to understand how the whole China looked like in those days. Were if only a fire, China would survive from this disaster. But this catastrophe lasted for 10 years while the world was developing towards the civilization. The revolution was finally ended up. But the box of Pandora had been ever opened up and its evil power is still dominating China, into the inner side of people’s mind. The incredibility, suspicion and many devil elements of human beings are ever exposed.
From the western country's invasion till this event, which lasted over 100 years, this old dragon had been beaten almost into a deadly status with injuries and wounds all over his body.
In order to bring the prosperity to this latter waken-up dragon, Chairman Deng, always regarded as a remarkable and unforgettable leader of the country, pointed out a direction for China to catch up the world. The result is we have caught up the world, even in an amazing speed.
When you have the money, do you seem have all? The society developed into today’s situation is also out of expectation of Deng. While we have things to enjoy the life, we are also losing many valuable traditions and the heritage of culture and history. By aggressively moving towards modernization and civilization, many historical relics were tore down by giving the recession of high and modern buildings. As a result, when VTers stepped into this country, you are puzzled whether this is a country with a history of 5000 years – no, it even looks like a country with 50 years of history. Tall and concrete buildings occupies the whole country with little spaces left for the antiquity. |
But it is the history. No one can dominate or change it. By moving towards the civilization, China re-builds its value to speak with the world. The credibility can be built up. The quality of people can be improved. But how about the destroyed historical buildings and lost humanity? Those are gone and the purity can never be traced back, even with several generations.
Probably, it’s the fate of China to seek for its origin through shattered pieces and recover with some incompletion left forever. This is a special article that I would like to contribute to VT and all of the VTers whom are interested with Chinese culture and history. I can understand it would be too complex for people from outside to understand thoroughly. But at least, as I mentioned, a neutral idea to this country survived from the longest history will be helpful for you to see the truth underneath.
You have to visit and live here for a while so that you can understand the above. |
