We spent one and a half days in Legoland in June 2004. Overall, we had an enjoyable time and with the age of our children (13 and 10), we think we spent about the right amount of time there. On the days we visited, the park was quite busy but certainly not crowded and queuing for rides was minimal.
Legoland is definitely an attraction for younger, pre-teen children or for those children and adults who don't like roller coasters. My son (13) found all but two of the rides extremely dull (four or five years ago, he would have been thrilled by most of them). Likewise, my daughter was only interested in the one major roller coaster (X-treme Racers), Power builders (see below) and a couple of other rides. Nonetheless, all of us were impressed with the Lego models. If you've ever played with Lego, you can't help but appreciate the skill (and dedication) needed to build the models. One of the fun things about the park is that every now and then you spot a model that you haven't noticed before, despite the fact you may have walked past it several times!
Besides the models and various rides, Legoland also has a cinema showing 3D films (quite entertaining), an exhibition of old toys, an area where children can try out Lego computer games (we had to prise our son away from those!) and a small but fun section where children can build car models and race them down a track. During the day, various shows are held throughout the park. We watched one involving a prince rescuing a princess from a castle with every one of the actors getting thrown into the moat at some point. It was good fun and the actors demonstrated some good acrobatics and diving skills.
There are different themed areas of the park with restaurants offering food that go with the theme. We ate at a couple of these and found them to be typical of what you might expect in a theme park. Hardly cordon bleu cooking but decent enough food that aims to please adults and children alike. A lot of overseas visitors will find things expensive in Legoland (it's expensive in Denmark generally), however at the time of writing, we?re living in Norway which is even more expensive, so rather perversely, we actually found the prices in Legoland reasonable!
Bearing in mind the comments I've made above and the age of our children, the favourite rides were the Extreme Racers roller coaster and the Power Builders ride. The latter must be the only ride of it's kind in the world because you custom-build and program the type of ride you want before you go on. To explain, you are seated on the end of a robotic arm that has a large selection of pre-programmed moves in it's memory. You get to pick which moves you want, which order you want them in and how fast or extreme you want to be moved around. You then sit back and enjoy your own personalised ride. Some moves involve you being twirled around and tipped upside down and depending on which "level" you choose, the ride can become really wild and crazy. But since you are the master of your own fate, you can hardly complain if you come off feeling sick! Providing they're tall enough, younger children can go on and the machine restricts it's moves to no more than "level 2" which is reasonably tame.
In my opinion, the ideal age for children visiting Legoland would be between 4 and 8. You could spend at least two full days in the park without them getting bored and enjoying all the rides and attractions. Older children will enjoy the park more for the models and the more grown up rides mentioned above.
Even if you don't go on this Legoland ride, it's worth going along to see the robotic arms waving around in a hypnotic... more travel advice
