Rome has a rather good public transportation, so at least you don't have to worry about that. It can get crowded in the morning when all the tourists are off to the sights, but usually it's OK. The good thing's there's always a couple of ways to get somewhere. ;)

The Romans have a specific way of entering / exiting a bus, so please try to do the same. Enter in the front & in the back & exit on the middle door. They will appreciate it [and won't hesitate to warn you if you don't]...

Another thing is stopping the buses, since they won't stop unless you don't signal it. When the bus is approaching [and if it's the one you need, of course] simply stick out your hand out in the street, so that he can see you. It can get quite strange in the beginning, but it's useful...
