"New England" in one small, glorious, package I grew up in New Hampshire. It's been a few years since I lived there(I'm not saying how many), but...roughly half my life was spent in this beautiful, cultured corner of America. Poor lil' NH is so misunderstood on so many levels; but those complex and full of character often suffer this curse. |

| | Hard to Define, Hard not to Love In some ways, New Hampshire is the rebel stepchild of the colonies. From the very beginning, this state and her residents have bucked trends and politics to a stunning degree. Say, twenty-years ago, New Hampshire was routinely pegged as "The Most Conservative State in the Nation". Yes, "Conservatism" in it's original form: Laissez Faire. No laws in the Granite State, my friend. No sales tax, no income tax, no helmet laws, no seatbelt laws, no tattoo laws, no fireworks laws, no blue laws. Government-free. So, you see, when people tell me California is all "easygoing" and laidback"... I'm not buying it. Bejesus... |
Even for me.... New Hampshire is hard to define. In recent years, New Hampshirites legalized gay marriage, outlawed mercury thermometers, aggressively prosecuted church abuses in Manchester, elected a female, Democratic governor, delivered primary victory for John McCain, and continued to welcome every form of biker to the Laconia Bike Week. And, now, they have the only legislature in the US with more women than men. It's just plain....weird. Beautifully so. | | |

Agraichen Tue Nov 25, 2008 19:24 UTC ...there's nothing like a small town in NH even when "invaded" by strange two wheeled vehicles periodically. | blint Sat Jan 26, 2008 14:21 UTC I loved your 'Old Home Day' tip. Sounds like lots of fun! :) | emilienoelle Fri Dec 1, 2006 19:57 UTC Spatula is a good word. I never considered it. You have a point about the spelling, too. You know I'm going to Regina's tomorrow because I can't stop thinking about it after reading your page! | jonah1 Thu Oct 19, 2006 09:20 UTC What an interesting and funny (i think) page - well done! Really never new much at all about the region but just goes to show there is much more depth in places than you anticipate! |
