"Knin, capital of former Serbian Krajina" Knin by interrailerz

Knin Travel Guide: 5 reviews and 19 photos

In the Balkan wars, the Serbian minorities in Eastern Croatia claimed their independence about 1992, when Croatia itself arise from Yugoslavia. This little "country" -- whose capital was Knin -- was called Krajina, and it was re-occupied by Croatian troops in 1995. As it is a "local custom" here, Croats were knocked out in 1992 then Serbs in 1995. Though it is recolonialised again, the area is somewhat extra-terrestrial, burnt houses, burnt cars, empty villages. It is very sad to see these villages and little towns (Drsnik, Kosovo (!), Knin etc) with wonderful landscapes, many chances (tourism - why not!?), etc., so close to our country, and on the train route Budapest - Zagreb - Split...

I want to visit this area later on to see if they will have succeeded to rebuild their life or not. Anyway, Knin town is very nice though ruined.

This is the area near Knin -- beautiful aint it!?
