Then...(from a previous visit in 2002) Savannah, Georgia is definitely the best city in the US. (Well, that's my opinion, but I think it counts for something) Somehow it gets overshadowed by its neighbors: Charleston, South Carolina; Jacksonville, FL; Atlanta, GA. But, I would bypass these cities and take the little detour to Savannah. Or see these cities first and appreciate Savannah more...whichever. It keeps its southern charm without having to alter it for tourists. I am sure a lot of people come here, but when you talk to people in bars or on the street, chances are they have stories to tell about growing up in the area. People in Savannah are the nicest people I have met while traveling in the US. While just walking down the street, I've been given roses made of palm leaves, offers for food and drink, samples or other things and great conversation. Additionally, it doesn't seem to be as developed as most coastal cities. |
| | Savannah Revisited We went back to Savannah a couple times this past summer...the most recent visit being 2 days ago (on September 17, 2006). A statement I made when I originally created this page seems a little outdated, but I'm keeping it because it does reflect changes. I said that Savannah keeps its charm without altering it for tourists. Now, it appears more that Savannah is trying to boost its tourism by adding things that epitomize "tourist traps". Such things like the variety of ghost tours or the 53.00 dollar trolley ride around Paula Deen's stomping grounds (with a lunch) take away from the city, I think. |
| | Savannah can sell itself--it doesn't need to add attractions they think tourists and tour groups would like. Indeed a money maker, but I wish there was some sort of restriction on introducing "seediness" to this fabulous city. History and architecture tours are great...I'm not speaking of them at all. Riding a trolley through the city is enjoyable if you rather not or cannot walk. Savannah remains beautiful and still has so much to explore. It's relaxed and you are in a good mood just being there. And it's continues to be my favorite city here in the US. |
