Things To Do: The longest covered bridge in the world!!

  • I was a little sad coming into New Brunswick. We had just spent many hours driving in heavy rain to explore the northern part of Maine. Both of us wanted to see the most northeastern city in the US--Caribou, Maine. WHAT a disappointment. So, we decided to not waste any more time and get into New Brunswick. We came in at Perth Andover and soon enough we saw a sign for "Hartland, New Brunswick--home of the longest covered bridge in the world" Wow, was I excited. This was potentially the best thing we would see before it got dark and I LOVE any thing or place that can claim to be the best, largest, smallest, longest, deepest, highest, widest...etc.
They aren't kidding...it's definitely a long covered bridge. It's a long bridge of any kind. I live in an area with lots of covered bridges, but this is about the size of every one i've ever seen in my whole life, put together. A little dilapidated, but still, it was nice to stop and see it. Hartland is a cute town as well...the rain let up for a few minutes as we got some pictures here and exchanged money.

Things To Do: And then...the World's Largest Axe!
  • Tip Rating:
  • I was definitely content seeing the longest covered bridge in the world and figured we'd just continue making our way to Fredericton without any more excitement. But, a short distance later, we came upon Nackawic. A town that not only has a cool name but also the home of the world's LARGEST Axe. In such a short time we came across TWO things that are significant in the WORLD. hahaha. Ohhh, the only word I can come up with for what I was feeling at that moment in time is "glee". I was more than ecstatic. An axe is so much more obscure than a bridge...this was great.
The axe is HUGE. And for a moment I was worried that such a precious object would be locked up in a museum, but no--it's out there for everyone to see in a park. I've never seen a larger axe (obviously--this is the largest one ever!) 66 feet high! And 7 tons of steel. It's not only a large axe, but it's heavy. I hope it doesn't fall over sometime--there's not an equally large piece of wood for it to split in the immediate area.

    Things To Do: Cape Jourimain
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you're going to PEI, you have to cross the Confederation Bridge and just before you get onto it from New Brunswick, you can exit off to the Cape Jourimain Nature Center. This place is very nice--the nature and visitor center alone is impressive. The displays are informative for every age group with lots of hands on activities. The focus is on recycling, ecosystems, migratory birds, etc. I loved this place:) There's also some trails that go out to the beach and farther down to the lighthouse. From the outside you can access an overlook, which we did (that's where 2 of the pictures on my intro were taken) but almost got blown right over the railing by a gust of wind. I noticed nesting posts for osprey but this area is known for migratory birds as its located along the Atlantic Flyway.
I used the bathroom here which is significant only because the sinks use rainwater and the toilets are "recycling toilets" What a wonderful, environmentally conscious place you are, New Brunswick.
Oh, there's also a restaurant located inside the 2nd building and a gift shop as well.

    Things To Do: Moncton
  • Tip Rating:
  • We didn't get to spend a lot of time here, but since it was recommended to us, we thought we'd at least check it out. As far as cities go, it's definitely a nice one. The downtown reminds me of Harrisburg or ever State College, PA (Penn State's town)...lots of shops, cafes and bars. It's a clean, walkable city with lots of people just hanging out. I'm sure spending a night here would be lots of fun as they make it easy to bar hop. We passed by on a Friday and heard many, many advertisements for things going on that night. Additionally, there are also galleries, the Moncton museum, farmers markets, and Magnetic Hill. Now, from what I read (but we didn't do this) you can go to magnetic hill, put your car in neutral and it goes uphill by itself. Magnetic Hill is also a family theme park--completely with restuarants, shops, go karts, miniature golf, a water park, a zoo, etc. Seems like a lot of fun, actually:)

Avoid the Magnetic Hill, it's a tourist trap. You go up the hill, put the car on neutral, then go back down the hill. We're supposed to believe that the car is going up by itself, but everyone knows they're going downhill.
