Washington Monument
A lot of times you'll hear the reference "inside the beltway" or "outside the beltway", hence my title.
DC is a great city and I know there are millions of pages on it, so I'll try to keep this away from what everyone else has written , if possible.

I was an intern there in 2001, on Capitol Hill. I have had a lot of great experiences, but I think this is the one I am the most thankful for. I never even thought about being an intern in Congress--my degree is in Geography--but this came up with focus on Environmental Policy and I was very fortunate to have been chosen for the pilot program. In the few months I was there, i got to meet some great people, most of which worked for the Congressman and the Congressman himself. There may be a lot of corrupt politicians out there, but he is not one of them. I admire this man very very much...

That was my first real taste of DC. I had been there on school trips and passing through, but that doesn't count. Well, you know what? It probably wasn't a "real" taste of DC because we were put in a huge, beautiful house in NW DC and we were among the maybe 2% of interns on Capitol Hill that got paid. So, really if I lived there now, it would be not nearly as glamorous as it was then.

Pros:"All of the main attactions are free, lots of great places to eat and things to do"
Cons:"Can get pretty crowded during Cherry Blossom season, unfortunate homelessness everywhere you walk, some unsafe parts"

Interesting information on your 'past' life! I've only stopped in DC once and was surprised to find sidewalk seating with cherry blossoms while we had huge snowdrifts back home! That canal trip sounds like a lot of fun.
