Name of Shop: Main Street
Cold Spring is well-known for its many antique shops. It's worth a walk down Main Street to check out the antiques as well as many specialty stores (jewelry, natural foods, books, Irish imports, etc.). CS is trying to become more diversified in its offerings, but the main draw is still antiquing. CS is also a great place to grab a meal, from the schmantzy (Cathryn's Tuscan Grill) to the down-home (Foundry Cafe) and everything in between. We like Le Bouchon, the cute little French place on Main, and also Riverview on Fair St., an Italian place with great views of the Hudson (hence the name) next to the public parking lot. Twice a year, the Cold Spring Antiques Dealers Association holds its Antiques Show in Mayors Park, with offerings ranging from art-deco perfume bottles to paintings to furniture. If you're all shopped out, drive north on 9D and take a hike - Little Stony Point is a good place to start, but there are trailheads all along the road to the Dutchess County line. You can park your car along 9D, but be careful of the traffic.

Name of Shop: Village of Beacon
Beacon, NY is emerging as a lively, artsy downtown, with enough to do to fill a day. Along Main Street, you'll find galleries, antiques stores, jewelry and book shops, and plenty of restaurants to choose from (including a new Thai restaurant, Sukhothai). Also be sure to check out the pastries at The Little Pie Shop. If you drive (the train station is a bit far to walk - arrange for a cab if you come up on Metro North), park at either end, and when you're done browsing, drive down to the other end. It's a bit of no-man's-land in between, a long way to walk with little to offer. In addition, on the second Saturday of each month, shops and galleries stay open until 9 pm, and special events are ongoing.
What To Buy: I'm not usually one for art, but in particular, I was impressed by the glass gallery, Hudson Beach Glass, @ 162 Main. A glassblowing studio on-site offers live demonstrations, but the real draw is the functional glass art inside the shop. Great little sushi dishes and old-fashioned glasses that fit like a puzzle with their bottoms so they won't slip off. Clever.
