The Bear Mountain State Park (about 90 minutes north of NYC) is a nice place to spend the afternoon. The main attractions are Hessian Lake, a pool, the Zoo and Trailside Museum, and the ice skating rink and vintage carousel. You can also go hiking, as far up as to the WPA-era Perkins Memorial Tower, with its spectacular views of the Hudson Valley and beyond. The Zoo and Trailside Museum has local and exotic animals in not-very-realistic habitats. The zoo is basically along a path. Also along the path are buildings with various exhibits and dioramas which explain the local history. At the end of the trail are the remains of a Revolutionary War fort. You may also walk down to an overlook of the Hudson River right next to the Bear Mountain Bridge. Parking is $6 per vehicle. Zoo admission is $1 (50 cents for 12 and under), carousel is $1. There is a snack bar at the carousel and vending machines near the Lake. NOTE: The Bear Mountain Lodge is indefinitely closed for renovation. A brunch and overnight lodging are available on-site, north of Hessian Lake.

Things To Do: Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival

Every summer, the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival is held under a tent (new one in 2006 has cool spires!) on the grounds of Boscobel Restoration, to rave New York Times reviews. Running from mid-June to the beginning of September, the festival holds two shows: usually a comedy and a drama, which now run in repertory. New in 2008 was The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged), which will also be running for the '09 season. Theatregoers are invited to come to the grounds early for picnicking on the scenic lawn overlooking the Hudson. Ticket prices range from up to $44 for the 2009 season, featuring Pericles and Much Ado About Nothing. The theater is dark on Monday nights.

Things To Do: Games, Rides, Livestock and Shakes at the Fair!

The Dutchess County Fair in Rhinebeck is exactly the fair experience that you remember from your childhood. Livestock exhibitions, horsemanship, and 4-Hers are side-by-side with the games, rides and food of the midway. And in the center of it all are the pig races! This fair never disappoints - there's more than enough to do for a day (and night)or two! Funnel cakes, sausage and peppers, whatever else you eat, save room for the fantastic 4-H milkshakes near the 4-H Gate. The lines are long for a reason! Admission for the August 2005 fair is $10 for adults, 12 and under are free, as is parking. Look for local discount coupons.

Things To Do: New York Renaissance Faire
|
Tip Rating: |

|
Every August and September, in Tuxedo, NY, about an hour north of NYC, the ski area of Sterling Forest transforms into the New York Renaissance Faire, part Medieval fantasy, part Elizabethan Renaissance world. The Faire has something for everyone - knights jousting on horseback (cheer for your favorite side!), human chess games, old-fashioned games of skill (think knife-throwing), Shakespearean plays, Robin Hood and Maid Marian shows, and various juggling, comedy, and other acts scattered throughout the faire. My favorite act was always the "Flaming Idiots" who have unfortunately retired. :( But there truly is something for everyone - no matter what their age or taste. Whether you like to throw back a yard of mead while gnawing on a turkey leg, or dress up as a Medieval wizard, there's a place for you here. Tickets run about $20 for adults - but look for discount coupons in local publications.
