The reconstructed Globe Theatre brings to life what you remember reading about in high school English. In the summer the Globe offers Shakespearean productions; in the winter, you can still enjoy guided tours of the theatre as well as a museum underneath. As a big fan of the Bard, I found it fascinating, but others in my group were just as interested without knowing so much of the Globe's background. Admission 8 pounds.

We stayed at a hotel near Kensington and were amazed our first morning out at the number of beautiful spring flowers that were already blooming in late March. The area around Kensington Palace (I believe this was where Diana spent her time) was busy with Londoners enjoying the bright spring weather.

The Museum of London gives visitors an overview of London city history, from its ancient Roman roots to the Great Fire of London (don't miss the Great Fire "theatre") to more recent historia. One could easily (and we did) spend hours wandering through the interesting exhibits.

The changing of the guard in front of Buckingham Palace only takes place every other day, if memory serves, so be sure to plan accordingly. We were lucky to go on a day when a dignitary (from India, we think) was coming in to the Palace, so there was more than the usual pomp and circumstance!

London's spiritual center, Westminster is the site of so many famous royal weddings, and of course, coronations. You can practically breathe the history within its expanse. Also notice all the many famous royals, spiritual leaders, writers, etc. who are buried here (some beneath your feet), especially in Poet's Corner. Be sure to take the time to walk around the more peaceful inner courtyard (snacks and souvenirs are sold along one side here). Tickets in 2002 were 6 pounds, now looks like it's 8 pounds.

I didn't realize before I went to London that the Tower of London is actually several buildings. Upon entering, you may join in a guided tour, or grab a map and go around yourself. The Medieval Palace is the first stop, with a view of tower life in the 13th century. Stop at Traitor's Gate - as seen in "Lady Jane" - where they brought prisoners in by boat. The White Tower holds the military artifacts, such as armor, swords, and guns. (See picture - guns arranged as art!) Of course, don't miss the Crown Jewels and the resident Ravens on the Tower Green. One could easily spend the day exploring the Tower of London and its bloody history. Admission in March 2002 was 11.50 pounds.

Tower Bridge is what you picture when you hear "London Bridge." London Bridge is just a regular bridge nowadays, but Tower Bridge, near the Tower of London, is the London landmark over the Thames. The high-level walkways that allow pedestrians to cross even while the bridge is lifted (which happens over 900 times a year) also give visitors an excellent vantage point over the city. The "Tower Bridge Experience" gives you an inside view as to how this "bascule" bridge works and was built.

Due to the British fondness for carrying home treasures from their vast empire, the British Museum is full of world-renowned artifacts. Among them is the Rosetta Stone, which upon its discovery in 1799, allowed archeologists to decipher Egyptian hieroglyphics. The stone told the same story in the hieroglyphics, modern Egyptian, and Greek. The famous Elgin Marbles, taken from the Parthenon and other buildings of the Acropolis, are also located here. Entrance to the Museum is free, although you may drop a donation into the collection box.

This was Charles Dickens' home during the later writings of Pickwick Papers, and where he wrote Oliver Twist and Nicholas Nickleby. The house itself is not large by today's standards - about 10 rooms within three stories. Here, however, you can imagine life as Dickens knew it, during his happier days with his wife Catherine. Admission was 4 pounds per person, March 2002.

The Queen's mounted Life Guards hold one of the most prestigious military positions. Every afternoon at 4pm the Dismounting Ceremony takes place. First the Guards undergo an inspection - down to whether they have creases in their boots! The mounted sentries stationed outside the Horse Guards are those who did the best at Inspection. There is limited space for spectators so be sure to arrive early!
