You realize that Djibouti is not an ordinary destination when boarding the near-empty Air France flight in Paris. Apart from a few expats, and Djiboutians living abroad, my travel companions were a collection of burly skinheads of undetermined origin off to man the French Foreign Legion base. For the country seems to owe its existence to its strategic location and close alliance with its former colonists. In these good/evil war-on-terror times, its location and alignment with the West may give the country (or at least its ruling élite) a new lease of life.
I was traveling on business and had to limit my visit to the tiny, dusty capital. If you enjoy unusual destinations, sleepy towns and hot, dry weather this could be the place for you. But unless you are trying to fill some gaps on your VT map (and Djibouti is a minute gap), there are probably more interesting places to spend your hard earned cash. |
