History of Trang showed that in the reign of King Rama II time, his son was appointed as first Governor of Trang. At that time the population was gathered at the township of Kuan Thani. Since then the administrative center was relocated 2 more times. Second was to Kantang and then lastly to Thap Thiang. This last move, the same place is now renamed as Trang.
As for the meaning of the word "Trang", it is still unclear how the name came about, although there are 4 possibilities. Among which it derived from 1] the Malaysian words "trang-kae" which literally means "dawn" or "the break of day". being a Malaysian, I am not sure about that. I think "terang" meaning "clear" is nearer and 2] from the Khmer word "Trang" which is also the name of a unique palm tree often seen in this region but rare out of the hinterland.
There is an old slogan that describe this provincial capital Trang aptly
"The city of Phraya Rasda, broad hearted citizens, delicious roast pork, origin place of the para rubber, lovely Sri Trang Flowers, beautiful coral beaches and wonderful waterfalls"
The Sri Trang flower - governor PhrayaRasda-nupradit brought a flowering plant over from Australia. This is the Jacaranda filicifolia of the Bignoniaceace family, has fine leaves and deep lilac colored flowers. Widely planted throughout the city of Trang, has since become the symbol of Trang.
Blessed with plenty of forested mountains and pristine coral seas, the province spend lots of time emphasizing their love for Nature. The seas outside Trang boasted of being home to Dugong, and they have 10 fantastic looking waterfalls on the wind ward slope of Khao Banta mountains along a 35 kilometers stretch inland road.
At the shore, there are efforts on conservation of Sea-turtles, Coral reef, sea-birds sanctuary, and lastly Phayun - Dugong.
Trang is less known to tourist as the province is overshadowed by the world class beaches in the neighboring Krabi province. But Trang offers more for Jungle trekking, cultures and historical places of interest.
Some figures to chew. The province has 114 kilometers of coastlines and 47 islands and my choice in impressing new friends that I bring to Trang would be Mrakaot Cave on Koh Mook and the Land of Coral around Kradan Island.
Trang is also dotted with a series of Caves, Caves with Temples and ancient drawings. So never short to destination to do explorations.
On the cultures aspect, there are cloth weaving factories using traditional methods. As Trang has a fair size Chinese community, there are good restauarants serving chinese food and don't forget Sea food as well.
I could never end singing about praises for this destination, as I still have a long list of places I have yet to complete.
- Pros:Clean city and places good for eco-tourism
- Cons:More expensive town than others
- In a nutshell:I love nature and there I love Trang
