Restaurant Name: Chac-Mool

We wanted to eat at the outdoor restaurant at Uxmal famed for its regional food, but they didn't open until 1pm, and we were ready to get on the road at noon. Sometimes it is a good thing that the restaurant you wanted is not open. We headed northeast to Santa Elena, and ate at a small cafe called Chac-Mool. This is a small, homey local restaurant. It would be very easy to pass it up, but don't. We had our best meal of our entire trip here.

Favorite Dish: The papadzules were outstanding. Papadzules are handmade corn tortillas rolled around ground pumpkin seeds and spices, topped with a tomato and a pumpkin seed sauce, and a crumbled hard boiled egg.

Directions: Chac-Mool is located in Santa Elena, which is outside Uxmal. Head in the direction of Kabah and Labna. It is located near one of the two turnoffs to the town.
