Yosemite in Winter

Visit Yosemite without the Crowds

Half Dome in Yosemite - 2004
My favorite time to visit Yosemite National Park is in the winter. Every January, we put the cross country skis on top of the car and head for the Park. We practically have the Park to ourselves.

Yosemite is a perfect place for bringing out the Ansel Adams wannabees.

Most Recent Trip

January 5, 2004 -- We just returned from annual trip to Yosemite, and this was the best ever! The day before we got there, the Park received a foot of new snow. It was sunny all day both Saturday and Sunday and never got above freezing, so the winter beauty remained -- literally frozen in time.
I took the color photo to the right in Jan. 2003. The black and white photo above was taken in Jan. 2004. You can see that in 2004, there is quite a bit more snow.

Because of the steep canyon walls, the face of Half Dome never receives sun in the middle of the winter, creating some very interesting lighting effects.

You're right, 6 AM is the best time to visit Yosemite Falls (even in summer). Great winter photos of Half Dome and Yosemite Falls.

An annual trip to Yosemite -- what a great habit. We used to go there off-season, too, back when I lived in California, but we never had nice snow like this.
