  • This is an excellent museum with provocative special exhibits. It is in a great location - within walking distance of Union Square. Closed on Wednesdays.

Coit Tower: Good destination for exercise
  • Tip Rating:
  • San Francisco Coit Tower

  • Coit Tower is a popular tourist spot, but I like it mainly because it is a destination where I can go during lunch time to unwind and get some exercise. Coit Tower was dedicated to San Francisco's volunteer firefighters in 1933. Interesting exhibit inside. Good views of the city. The walk to the tower is healthier than eating a huge lunch.

Alcatraz: Alcatraz Island - Another Popular Tourist Spot
  • Tip Rating:
  • San Francisco Alcatraz

  • Popular with tourists, interesting if you enjoy dank prison cells, examining tiny holes that maximum security convicts cut in their attempts to escape. I kept looking for Burt Lancaster and his pigeons.

For the REAL tip, and take note, book your trip to Alcatraz on the 2:00 pm ferry on Sat. of Fleet Week (mid October of each year). You'll have the BEST spot in the house for the Fleet Week air show. We did that once, unknowingly, and it was the best part of the trip to Alcatraz - we saw the Blue Angels, stealth bombers and fighter jets fly directly overhead.

CASTRO District: Mision San Francisco de Asis (Mission Dolores)
  • Tip Rating:
  • San Francisco CASTRO District
  • Mission Dolores, San Francisco, CA
  • by karenincalifornia

  • It is said that this is where San Francisco began. Mission Doloroes was established by Father Junipero Serra in 1776 and the building was completed in 1791.

In this picture, the original mission is the smaller mission-style building on the left. To the right is the Basilica, which replaced a parish church destroyed in the 1906 earthquake. The Basilica was completed in 1918.

The inside of the chapel is beautiful and ornate. The ceilings replicate the original Ohlone Indian designs.

This is a peaceful place to reflect, regardless of your religious persuasion.

NORTH BEACH: Will the Real San Francisco please stand up?
  • Tip Rating:
  • San Francisco NORTH BEACH
  • St. Peter and Paul Church, North
  • Beach
  • by karenincalifornia
  • Send Photo to a Friend
  • It has to be North Beach. North Beach symbolizes everything San Francisco is about - a city settled by an immigrant population, constantly changing communities, always diverse.

North Beach is best known for its Italian settlers, but it is also the home of people from many other parts of the world. This is the part of San Francisco where my husband's family from Serbia made their first home in America amongst Italians, Irish, Chinese and other Slavs.

Whatever its population, North Beach will always be one of the most colorful communities in San Francisco.

Golden Gate Bridge: Golden Gate Bridge - spanning the mouth of the Bay
  • Tip Rating:
  • San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge
  • Golden Gate Bridge beneath a waning

  • by karenincalifornia
  • Send Photo to a Friend
  • If you come to San Francisco, and you are looking for a nice place to take a stroll, then you should walk across the Golden Gate Bridge. Sure, there are a lot of tourists, and this is a very touristy thing to do, but you cannot beat the view.

To the left of the bridge in this picture is Fort Point, built to protect San Francisco during the US Civil War. The Fort never had to fire a gun during the Civil War because the Confederates came nowhere close to attacking San Francisco. Fort Point is now a museum.

Sausalito / Marin County: Take a ferry boat to Marin County
  • Tip Rating:
  • At the San Francisco Ferry Terminal at Pier 1, you can catch the ferry to Marin County. You may even bring a bicycle on the boat.

The ferry is relaxing and scenic. You can get a beer, glass of wine or snacks at the snack bar.

I take this ferry to and from work almost every work day. If you'd like to commute into work with me, click on this link:

San Francisco Zoo: San Francisco Zoo
  • Tip Rating:
  • San Francisco San Francisco Zoo
  • Giraffe at San Francisco Zoo
  • by karenincalifornia
  • Send Photo to a Friend
  • No big city would be complete without a zoo, and San Francisco is no exception. Like most zoos, this one could use more funding and a face lift. If nothing else, the San Francisco zoo would do well to invest in better signage providing more information on the animals.

Nonetheless, the zoo is worth visiting with children, or with bigger kids, too (including adults) who find enjoyment in seeing the animals.

    CHINATOWN: Chinatown
  • Tip Rating:
  • San Francisco CHINATOWN
  • Chinatown, San Francisco
  • by karenincalifornia

  • San Francisco's Chinatown is vibrant and bustling. Some tipsters have said Chinatown is touristy - I disagree. This is an authentic Chinese community. The restaurants are excellent. An ability to read Chinese is a plus if you plan to shop at any one of the many Chinese markets.

The best streets are Stockton and Grant.

I can't believe how many restaurants I have missed. I only visit once a year now, but I lived in SF for many years. I can't wait to try some of your picks when I am out in June.

Happy Birthday, Karen! To celebrate your birthday I'm just having a look at the updates that you have added to this page since July 26, 2004. BART didn't even exist yet when I was living and working in Berkeley. Sorry to hear it's already old and shabby.

Thanks for visiting my Le Thor page! We're planning a visit to the US (2009) and hope to be in California in late summer. With a bit of luck the weather will be as good as it was in France.
