Joshua Tree National Park

A Different Kind of Desert

Joshua Tree National Park, CA
I lived in Southern California for 12 years, and camped in Joshua Tree National Park only once - 4 months before moving away. That was a mistake and a prime example of our not knowing what we had in our backyard until it was almost too late.

What finally got us out there? It was Comet Hale-Bopp. We were living in Pasadena, CA, where the light pollution and smog made the comet appear as a very faint smudge. We needed to get out of the city (way out) to see the comet.

We chose Joshua Tree National Park. A perfect spot for comet gazing and a lot of other things, too!

Pros:"Very clear air - something you view as priceless when living in Southern CA. Perfect climate in spring."
Cons:"Desolate, but that is part of its beauty (not really a con). Hot in summer."

Those Joshua trees really do look odd. I see what you mean that they don't provide much shade.

Karen, I was recently in Palm Desert but did not visit Joshua Tree. After looking at your great pictures, I'll be sure to go next time. Ken
