Herceg Novi served as our base for visiting Montenegro. This is a seaside town caught in a time warp.
Our first visit to Herceg Novi was in 1986. Now, 18 years later, Herceg Novi has seen very little change. There are perhaps a few more tables set up in the main plaza in town, the large state run hotels are perhaps a little more run down, and we couldn't find our favorite seafood restaurant, but other than that Herceg Novi of 2004 is the same as Herceg Novi of 1986.
Herceg Novi is a convenient place to stay while exploring the Montenegro coast and towns in Southern Croatia, such as Dubrovnik. Of all the towns on the Bay of Kotor (Boka Kotorska), Herceg Novi has the largest number of accommodations and restaurants. Its promenade along the beach is as lively as ever, and we enjoyed the mix of cultures visiting this peaceful coastal town. |

| Pros: | "Seaside location, inexpensive, great deals on accommodations, not overcrowded" | | Cons: | "Good place to sleep for a week long vacation, but not enough enough to do to hold one's interest for more than a couple of days, economy is still struggling" | | In A Nutshell: | "Quaint Montenegrin town that hasn't changed in 20 years." |

deecat Tue Aug 29, 2006 16:12 UTC Fascinating information about an area I know so little about. Loved your food descriptions of high carbs in the mornings! Always high quality pages, Karen, and a joy to read and see. | JLBG Wed Mar 16, 2005 04:21 UTC Karen, this is another of your fine pages ! Even if many cities in the Yugo Slave area have often changed ruler, it seems that Herceg-Novi is the champion ! | pchamlis Sun Nov 21, 2004 21:17 UTC You need something that will make it easier to glide through those narrow streets. Nice page as always. | Beograd Mon Oct 11, 2004 12:00 UTC I don't know if Herceg Novi has changed or not in 29 years, but you do have a point. Although, you can find a few interesting things to see in the area and keep Novi as homebase :)) |
