General Tips: A medieval maze
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: Dubrovnik is a web of narrow streets and alleys converging onto the main promenade, the Stradun or Placa. Some of the streets are made up of stairs like this one and go straight up the hill. Explore these side streets – you’ll find charming restaurants and shops. This street takes you up to the residential part of the old town on the north or hillside part of town, and it's a good workout, too!

    General Tips: Seismically reinforced

  • Favorite Thing: While most of Dubrovnik was heavily damaged in the disastrous earthquake of 1667, the city walls that were built around the 15th century survived. They are up to 25 meters high, 1 to 6 meters thick and include towers, corner fortifications, bastions and one large fortress.

Over time the walls were reinforced. The massive walls of Dubrovnik in the past were partly responsible for Dubrovnik's relative autonomy, and today remain an impressive show of strength.

    General Tips: Dubrovnik's maritime past
  • Tip Rating:
  • Dubrovnik - Harbor at Dubrovnik, Croatia

  • Favorite Thing: In the past, Dubrovnik was always a threat to Venice. When the city was liberated in 1358, its maritime fleet grew to such prominence that Dubrovnik became the most important port on the eastern Adriatic coast. Dubrovnik also became famous for its shipbuilding and had an excellent reputation for building seaworthy ships in the 16th century.

Fondest Memory: This picture was taken in the famous Dubrovnik harbor. In the background is the island of Lokrum. I was told in 1986 that is has a naturist beach, but I didn't check it out in 2004. A very, very good VT friend once asked me if I had a picture of this beach. The answer is no, but if I did, I would have sent it.

    General Tips: Then – 1986
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: Here I am, manning the cannon on top of the city wall in Dubrovnik in 1986, the year of my honeymoon. You know, I’ve been looking for those pink pants. I wonder what happened to them?

    General Tips: Now – 2004
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: Still manning the cannon, and now it’s 2004. What does one have to do to get a promotion in this place??

  • Favorite Thing: That's the name of this famous staircase in Dibrovnik - "By the Jesuits".

This staircase was built after the devastating 1667 earthquake and leads up to a Jesuit Church. The building of this staircase and the town square below it are a couple of the major changes made to the city after the earthquakes destruction.

  • Favorite Thing: ....when they get out of hand.

This is one of the towers on the wall around the old town of Dubrovnik. The building of the city walls began in the 12th century. The Dubrovnik Statutes mention that new, stronger walls were in the process of being built, while documents dating back to 1296 mention them as finished.

Hi Karen, Whew...the 1667 earthquake must have been a heck of an event. Gives "urban renewal" a whole new meaning. We think Croatia is next for us...we'll try to stay on the right side of the law ;-) Thx...Tom
