This picture shows how we always ate lunch and dinner in Hvar. Always outside. Always by the sea. Always feasting on seafood with a fantastic bottle of local wine. All Hvar cafes and restaurants we tried were excellent.
Favorite Dish: To this day, we still talk about the fried calamari we had on Hvar as the best calamari we have ever had in our lives. Also outstanding was the whole fish cooked with olive oil, garlic and parsley. Mmmmmmm! Cooking the fish whole is the important part, with the eyeball staring up at you. This is not the American way - for some odd reason we think our fish must always be boned, skinned and with heads cut off. However, fish caught in the Adriatic cannot be eaten the American way or it will not taste as good as it should. When I returned to America, I wanted to make the fish Adriatic style, with bones still in, skin on, head on and eyeball staring up at me. At the US fish market (many fish markets, in fact), I tried to buy fish this way, but the markets thought I was crazy. Who eats fish with the head still on and eyeball staring up at you? I will have to return to Croatia for this -- no luck in the US.

Restaurant Name: Amfora Dining Room
We ate breakfast every morning of our stay at the Amfora Hotel because breakfast was included in the price of the room. On one of the mornings, we sat down and ordered our food. Even though the restaurant was half empty, two tourists came up to our table and ordered us to leave. We asked why and they said "You don't understand the right way to travel. This is OUR table and it will always be our table as long as we are here." Now, if it were up to me, I would have refused to give up my territory, and would have eaten my breakfast with them, whether they liked it or not. My husband, ever the peacemaker, hauled me over to another empty table, and thus, an international incident was avoided.
Favorite Dish: None at this hotel. Food was bland. Eat at one of the many outdoor cafes instead.
