Split is an important tourist destination and port for Croatia, so when you visit, you will see an "old" Split and a "new" Split. The old town area has a few towers for climbing and sightseeing. This picture was taken at the top of one of our climbs up a narrow staircase in the Bell Tower with a less than reassuring handrail. Don't look down as you climb up!

Just outside the Zlatna Vrata (Golden Gate) in Split, you can see the statue of Bishop Gregory of Nin, sculpted by the famed Croatian sculptor, Ivan Mestrovic. Grgur Ninski was a 10th century Croat bishop who has been honoured for centuries for asserting the right against the Vatican to say mass in Croatian. We figured he had to be a pretty important guy to get such a big statue.

Diocletian, a Roman emperor, began building this lavish palace in Split in 295 A.D. and retired to it in 305 A.D. when he voluntarily abdicated his emperorship. Must have been one hell of a golden parachute he got out of the Roman Empire. To this American (me), born and raised in the Western U.S., and who thinks anything 100 years old is old, this ancient palace was incredibly impressive. Also, very well preserved. A must see in Split.

We're going up there?? I love this photo of the Bell Tower in Split and an ancient column (is it Doric, Gothic, Corinthian?) The Bell Tower was constructed in the year 1100 AD. Sveti Duje was one of the most beautiful romanesque towers, but it was radically changed in the 19th century. (Hvala, diocletianvs!) Yes, we did climb up the Bell Tower, which would not be permitted in the US because of potential liability. The stairway is narrow, steep and the hand rails just didn't look too trustworthy. I don't think they would have saved me if I had slipped. But, in the end, the view of Split was worth it.

Visit the Mestrovic Gallery in the Split area. Ivan Mestrovic (1883 - 1962) was a famed Croatian sculptor. The gallery is housed in the summer home Mestrovic designed and built in 1939 for himself. The exhibit inside and out is incredible. Mestrovic was extremely talented and had a contemporary, but unique style.

A fine example of Ivan Mestrovic's work is his Distant Chords, cast in bronze in 1918. This sculpture adorns the lawns of the Mestrovic Gallery in Split. Mestrovic was an amazing man, not just as an artist but as an outspoken opponent to the repressive Austro-Hungarian empire and then the Nazi regime. Much of his art is symbolic of his political leanings. His outspokenness put his life and the lives of his family in jeopardy, causing them to have to flee their beloved Croatia.
