    • The Kilauea ("Rising smoke cloud") lighthouse sits on top of a lava flow on the north shore of Kauai. Built in 1913 with a beautiful clamshell lens, it stands 52 feet high and operated until 1976.

    Today, a bird sanctuary has been preserved next to the lighthouse. To help you out with your birding activities, an exhibit with lots of interesting information about the local birds has been placed around the lighthouse on the bluffs.

    • The abundance of rain on Kauai means an abundance of waterfalls. One of the most popular falls to visit are the Wailua Falls near Lihue. These falls are seen with the opening credits of "Fantasy Island".

    • Opaekaa Falls are popular and easy to get to. There are many more falls all over Kauai in addition to Wailua and Opaekaa, both of which are popular with sightseers because they are mentioned in all the guidebooks.

    • The Hanalei Pier was made famous by the movie "South Pacific". The travel books make much of the fact that this is where Mitzi Gaynor sang "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Out of My Hair."

    Hanalei Beach itself is a great swimming beach in the summer. We heard the surf gets pretty wild in the winter. What a contrast in summer! The Bay is calm in the summer and suitable even for children.
