The National Gallery is my favorite art museum of all art museums. I just love the building, the impressive interior, and of course all the fabulous art. I'm sure it must get very crowded in summer, but in November, I had no complaints about the crowds. A great number of the masters' paintings are exhibited here. Absolutely stunning and a must see.

No trip to London is really complete without a visit to Buckingham Palace and watching the changing of the guards. The problem is, in November, they don't do it everyday. No matter, the crowds show up every day anyway. We were in one of those crowds, waiting, hoping that the guards would change. Never happened. But what we DID see was the Queen's Rolls Royce (with Queen inside) drive up to Buckingham Palace after a meeting at the Parliament. That was a big deal, apparently. She was followed by a few Dukes who meant something to some in the crowd. The changing of the guards (when it happens) occurs at 11:30 am (or so we were told). We waited until noon, and then when it seemed pretty clear that those guards were staying put, we headed off to Belgravia in search of a pub and a pint of ale.

London has an amazing selection of shows and plays. There seemed to be more to choose from than even New York. Discount ticket brokers are all over the place. We bought tickets to Wicked through our hotel, just two days before the show. This was amazing in and of itself, since in the US, Wicked would sell out weeks in advance. Wicked played at the Apollo Victoria, which is just to the left of Victoria Station shown in this picture. The theatre is huge - which may account for availability of seats - and it was not a sell out. By the way, the show was fantastic. Even my 19 year old son enjoyed it.

I've always been fascinated by the the story of King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. Visiting the Tower of London, where King Henry sent his poor wife and had her executed was quite an experience. The Tower of London is impressive. It's quite an experience to wander around the halls and towers, view the crowns and diamonds, swords, armours, and know that you are following the footsteps of people who were part of major history. This is where our visit in November was a plus. We showed up, wandered all over the place and there were no crowds. We had read that in the summer the place is packed and you even have to reserve tickets in advance. Go in November. Trust me on this.

The Tower Bridge in London is really the most spectacular of bridges. It literally takes your breath away. During our visit in 2008, it was undergoing major renovation. In fact, much of London was being renovated in preparation for the 2012 Olympics. Be prepared - if you will be visiting London between 2008 and 2012, you will see quite a bit of scaffolding and road barriers. Despite this, the city is still one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

Westminster Abbey is amazing. It's huge and full of history. Definitely get an audio tour. It made a huge difference for us. The audio tour gave us little tidbits about all kinds of people (royalty, poets, writers) buried there. I stood near the spot that Cromwell was buried for two years, but then his body was dug up, he was hanged (dead) and then his head was cut off. Quite gruesome. Talk about holding a grudge.

The Churchill Museum is just off Whitehall. It provides an excellent history of Churchill's life, his living and working arrangements during WWII and his life afterwards. You can see the maps rooms, Churchill's bedroom, Mrs. Churchill's bedroom, and the super secret secure green phone. This is a must for all war buffs. It definitely holds interest for everyone else, too.

One of the highlights of our trip was sitting in on a session of the House of Commons. I have heard the line is quite long in the summer, but in November, our wait was only about 45 minutes. As you are waiting, you are moved from station to station, so you have some time to gaze at the stunning architecture. When we finally reached the observation galley, the House of Commons was debating a bill on the economy. The debate was both informative and entertaining. I highly recommend sitting in on a session.
