The owners of the house we were renting in Todi recommended a visit to the small medieval town of Bevagna. If it hadn't been for their recommendation, we probably would have missed it. Bevagna's origins date back to ancient Umbrian and Estruscan times. Roman ruins from 2nd century A.D. have been somewhat preserved. Most of the existing structures were built beginning in the 1100s and over the next several centuries. The town of Bevagna was absolutely the quietest Italian town we visited. In fact, we were the only tourists in town during our afternoon visit. I recommend visiting Bevagna in the morning, not the afternoon when all the shops close up. Better yet, visit Bevagna from June 20 - 30 during the Le Gaite Faire - an exciting ten day replication of life in the middle ages in a country town in Italy. |

| Pros: | "Not crowded - and this is a complete understatement, flat, no hills to climb" | | Cons: | "Deserted, most shops were closed when we were there in the afternoon" | | In A Nutshell: | "A nice stopping point after leaving the crowds of Assisi" |

Callavetta Wed Mar 9, 2005 18:37 UTC You may have discovered the last untouristy place in Italy! What a pretty place. Too bad the enotecca was closed. :-( | deecat Fri Mar 4, 2005 18:03 UTC Karen, I had fun reading about you and your family being the only ones that afternoon in Bevagna. Looks like interesting architecture. Can't call it a Tourist destination.LOL |
