We stood in a very lengthy and slow moving line to get into the Vatican Museum, which is the only way into the Sistine Chapel. Get there very early in the morning, or during lunch. We were out at noon, and to our surprise, we saw the line was considerably shorter. While you are in line, you'll be bombarded by freelance tour guides seeking customers. Most are looking for English speaking tourists. You can certainly opt for a guide, and you'll probably learn a lot more than you might on your own. I don't know if you'll get into the museum any quicker. Even though the guides would say "No need to stand in line", I noticed they would gather up their tourists in a bunch at the entrance and then go back several times through the line to make their group as big as possible before going into the museum. Once you opt to go with the tour guide, you've lost your place in line, so it's kind of hard to say "I've changed my mind" when you find out your guide is still out there, looking for more takers. There's always some kind of scam going on, isn't there?

Do NOT sit on the Typewriter stairs. My 15 year old son did this to give his feet a break, and some armed military guards with big guns came over and made him stand up. I don't know what they would have done if my son decided to get smart with them. Is it a felony to sit on those stairs? Is it a capital offense? My son very intelligently decided not to test the waters. Somehow standing up doesn't seem like such a big deal when you're being ordered to do so by a tough looking military guy with a gun. Never saw my son so quickly obedient before...

Nemorino Thu Apr 5, 2007 21:00 UTC Great advice, but . . . if there's one thing I'm not, it's an early riser! So either I'll have to turn my life on its head or find some other way to see all these great things in your tips. | Pawtuxet Wed Feb 28, 2007 15:11 UTC You've done an excellent job on your Rome page!
