Enjoy Rome before sunrise. Being the early riser I am, I would get up every morning before sunrise and take hour long walks throughout Rome. This is a picture I took on one of my early morning walks along the Tiber River. I would usually start out by 5:00 am and walk until the sun was up. I enjoyed the peace and quiet of the city. This is the time at which Rome sleeps. Is Rome safe for a woman alone in the dark? I did this every morning on my own and each morning walked to different parts of Rome - Campo Dei Fiori, Piazza Navone, Tridente, Via Veneto, Colosseo, Trastevere, and Vaticano. I never saw anything amiss, and I felt just as safe as I do at home in San Francisco (very safe). The key is to look like a tough - like you'll belt anyone who threatens you, and you'll do fine.

Of course, if you are in Rome, you must visit Vatican City. Nuff said. This is my son Danny in Vatican City. He's a smart kid -- a Catholic scholar at his Catholic high school and he's not even Catholic. As a 15 year old in Rome, he enjoyed his visit to the Vatican quite a bit. Don't lose people at the Vatican. We lost my husband for about 30 minutes. There's thousands of people at the Vatican so lost people are tough to find.

St. Peter's Cathedral is an amazing architectural work and collection of art. Try to go in the morning because it does get crowded. We didn't see the Pope, but we did see a lot of sculptures and artwork. The interior of St. Peter's, as you can see, is plastered with gold. It's very beautiful, but I couldn't help thinking about the extravagance while most of the Catholic population lived on a pittance.

This must have been some kind of famous statue, because were a lot of people standing around it and taking pictures. Just kidding - of course we all know it is the Pieta, created by Michaelangelo in 1500.

You will see a LOT of art while you walk through the Vatican Museum to the Sistine Chapel. This is only one of about a hundred hallways. It's overwhelming, really, and difficult to focus the proper amount of attention on any single object of art. That's not to say you shouldn't come here. You should. You must. The exhibits take your breath away. To see so much art by famous masters in one place is truly amazing. You will just need about 365 days to really appreciate all of the works.

Now here's a shot of the Spanish Steps that you don't often see - a deserted piazza from the top of the stairs. I visited the Spanish Steps on an early morning excursion. This photo was taken just before sunrise, looking down Via Condotti.

And on another morning, I took an early morning stroll to the Typewriter. Otherwise known as Vittoriano, a monument to the first king of Italy. Or you can call it the Wedding Cake. It houses a museum to Italian war heroes, which I personally found a bit boring. Thankfully, there was no charge to get in, so I didn't feel like I threw away money. See my warning and danger regarding the Typewriter.

Even my teenagers thought the Colosseum was pretty amazing. You can join a tour group on the spot if you want. What new thoughts can I pen about the Colosseum that haven't already been said? It was old, big and hot. And, of course, a must see while in Rome. The partially frozen water we bought afterwards from a high priced vendor for 4 Eurodollars a piece was highway robbery, but a godsend.

The Forum is fascinating - but make sure you take a guidebook with you because nothing is labeled. While we were wandering about the Forum, one of those freelance tour guides came up and asked us if we would like a tour guide. We politely declined, but then had to listen to a diatribe about how parents these days were doing a disservice to their kids because they weren't educating them right, and the the problem with parents these days is they didn't know enough to turn sightseeing into a highly educational experience. Translated, she was saying "Hire me, but if you don't, you're lousy parents and your kids will grow up to be dregs in society." Whatever....

The Pantheon has been preserved amazingly well for something that is so old. It is centrally located -- just a few short blocks from the Piazza Navona -- so you can walk to it from just about any part of the main part of Rome.

Nemorino Thu Apr 5, 2007 21:00 UTC Great advice, but . . . if there's one thing I'm not, it's an early riser! So either I'll have to turn my life on its head or find some other way to see all these great things in your tips. | Pawtuxet Wed Feb 28, 2007 15:11 UTC You've done an excellent job on your Rome page!
