Churches: St Joseph (East Church) @ WangFuJing

  • Favorite Thing: There are 6 churches in the city district that are accessible by bus / subway...the others are outside of the city in the rural areas. It is recommended that you join the local churches for pilgrimage in MAY instead. By the way, the catholic church in Beijing is called the Patriotic Catholic Church of China, not the Roman Catholic Church because its loyalties are with the government (the cultural revolution), not with the Pope...

Fondest Memory: This is St Joseph's at Wangfujing. Just walk north past the shopping area...its nearby.

  • Favorite Thing: Another one of St Joseph @ WangFuJing...
Visit my travelogue (album 4 or 6) for complete pilgrimage photographs

Fondest Memory: The churches here are only open in the wee hours of the morning *yawn* so if you cannot get up early, don't go unless you want to see only the outside....

    Churches: Xishiku (North Church)

  • Favorite Thing: The next church that we should go to is the North Church, better known as the Xishiku Church at the crossroads of FuYouJie....Its the BIGGEST church in Beijing and one of the main ones in China...Visit my travelogue (album 4 or 6) for complete pilgrimage photographs

Fondest Memory: From St Joseph's, continue walking north till you reach the "Art Museum (Mei Shu Guan)". Cross the road and take 109, asking to get off at FuYouJie....then the church should be about a 2 minute walk to your left once you alight.

    Churches: St Michael's Church
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Favorite Thing: Walk east on Qianmen Dong Dajie....for about 15 minutes....you should see it on your left after a few crossroads. Its worth taking a look if you are catholic. A truly beautiful church. Really underrated!

Fondest Memory: The vertical pictures are much nicer than this....so visit my travelogue for more pictures! Album 2 and 4

  • West Church @ Xizhimen (nei) Da Jie
  • by egosyncratix

  • Favorite Thing: Unfortunately, the West Church is the only church i havent yet been into....its the most run down in Beijing and I almost missed it. From Xizhimen subway, head east and you should see it on your right after about 20 minutes.

Fondest Memory: Unless you are like me....otherwise, I would urge you to give it a miss

  • Favorite Thing: This is the church that is a little difficult to find because it is "hidden" in a hutong and although I figured how to go in the end, I really do not know how to describe it to you because I think the best way would be via Hongqiao Market (though I havent tried).

Fondest Memory: From Chongwenmen, walk south to GuangAn Da Jie....then turn left and ask for directions to XinFu Road. Once you get there, the traffic wardens in brown are pretty helpful if you ask them about the Catholic church.

I can't believe it,there're so many catholic churches in beijing, I just know 4 of them, south, east, west, north church. GREAT WORK!btw can you tell how do get all this information? MERRY CHRISTMAS 2004!

I remember the no flush outhouses in rural America. These evolved into the portable potties at events and construction sites. Often there are stories of trying to use the over flowing pot & we sit on it. City people had chamber pots.
