Well, here I am...and here I will stay from Aug 2003 to July 2004. Never in my life was I too inclined to come to China, but I am enjoying it so far. More than I am learning academically, I am getting down to exploring the city myself, navigating through the labyrinths of hutongs and artfully dodging the globs of spittle like a character in a computer game. Here I also bring you a rare glimpse of the Catholic faith in Beijing...Enjoy :)
- Pros:too many nooks & crannies to explore
- Cons:Watch out for pot holes cos' you sure don't want to fall and taste some spit!

Was looking for Sunday mass schedule. I was amazed when I saw all those beautiful churches in Beijing. I thought St Joseph's was it. Nice to visit.Am going end of the month but have qualms bout getting lost looking for those churches.
I can't believe it,there're so many catholic churches in beijing, I just know 4 of them, south,east,west,north church. GREAT WORK!btw can you tell how do get all this information? MERRY CHRISTMAS 2004!
I remember the no flush outhouses in rural America. These evolved into the portable potties at events and construction sites. Often there are stories of trying to use the over flowing pot & we sit on it. City people had chamber pots.

It brings back so many good memories when I read your Beijing page ! I didn't know there were so many churches in BJ ! We were biking and lost in a hutong when we came upon West Church ! It was nice because unexpected !!
St. Mary's is also referred to by Beijing expats as the "South Gospel" or 'SOGO' church. (There's convenient shopping nearby.)
