Phuket After The Tsunami

by faridah - last update: Jul 1, 2005

Phuket is Alive!

Phuket or the original name 'Bukit' in malay means 'hill'.

My first impression of Phuket is that it does not fit to be called 'Island Paradise'.The beaches around Phuket itself did not have crystal clear waters.

After 6 days there, I can feel the buzz and excitement of the place especially Patong area where I stayed. The place seems to be alive and we tourist are the main reason for this. The whole town revolves around the Tourists, the restaurant, the shops, the beaches, the pubs, the message parlors, the spas.

This whole town revolves around tourism and it definitely makes you feel special you are there.

The cost of living in Phuket is the highest in Thailand. The main income of the island is Tourism.

June to October is the rainy season making the water choppier and the waves and current stronger.

You can still see the destruction the Tsunami did in Patong area. Some shops remain close 6 months after the Tsunami. But most have bounced back and the place is raring to go. More tourists are needed as most hotels remains empty.

We were lucky to have a guide who was very helpful and friendly,
Chalee. As soon as we land in Phuket we were whisked off for our complimentary city tour even though we were not ready to do any shopping.

If you have always wondered about Phuket now is the right time to go. With the town not so crowded and hotels having loads of promotions, you got nothing to lose!

Sorry for there are no pictures posted as I m still fond of SLR, will definitely use my husband digicam for next trip. : )
