I lived there for 6 weeks recently, while taking a Tefl course. My flat was in Ujilpotvaros next to the cinema and being Autumn there were no tourists everywhere just me living in a flat bymeself in the middle of a bloody mad house.
However you soon get used to it ,and its much safer than England and these pages contain all the places i found that i can remember the names of. |
The best way to find out what's happening in the city is to either read the Budapest Sun or Times which are free in a lot of bars ,but in my experience highly dull and practically useless. Or get a copy of Pesti-Est which is in Hungarian but is still easy to use and has comprehensive listings and the phone numbers for everywhere. |
The city itself has been knocked about a bit by the heavy fighting in World War 2. The seige of the city and the destruction of the bridges was compounded by heaving fighting in Buda and a last stand by the SS on the castle hill.
The 1956 revolt against the Soviets saw heavy fighting in Pest and many of the major buildings and police stations are have bullet holes round windows and doors. These scars give Budapest a lot more character than other places i've visited and are a synbol of pride to many of the locals. |

newyorkerman Wed Jul 18, 2007 16:25 UTC Great tips on the bar scene there. Probably not what I'd need, but you never know, especially about the local beers. Köszönöm! Szia! | GyuriFT Fri Jun 9, 2006 08:16 UTC The Moscow Square (Moszkva tér) is not that bad because there is an OK shopping mall nearby and a pretty good UNDERGROUND game retaurant (St. Jupát). | chbuchie Tue Nov 29, 2005 12:13 UTC Im flying to Budapest tomorrow, your pages are great, together with the forum replies helped me so much to prepare my trip , I cant wait to be there & will surely add my pix afterwards.... | m-joy Tue Nov 2, 2004 08:04 UTC This is a brilliant page about Budapest, will try some of your tips for sure.
