The ferry from Hvar arrived in the docks and we weren't sure what to make of the place ,tower blocks stretched up the side of mountains and the top few rows of houses were still half finished/ gutted by shelling ,then we went over the top of the hill and saw the old city and realised why we were there.
Originally Venetian Ragusa the medeival city was shelled by the nefarious Montenegrins using artillery and wire guided rockets from the old fort overlooking the city. Widely credited with turning the world opinion in favour of the Croats the motive for the shelling is still unexplained but largely regarded by the widesprea assumption that every generation of Montenegrins has a genetic predisposition to having a bit of a loot and then going home. |
| | An international effort rebuilt the old city and the walls but the shelling is still a central part of the local mentality and a defining moment in many peoples lives. The ruined cable car is a kind of monument to the shelling with its pylons still intact.
The city itself is nothing but narrow streets and steep hills ,you end up with legs like Jane Fonda if you stay here long enough ,its nowt but steps everywhere |
