The Maltese Islands

by Josibezz - last update: Aug 19, 2005

Malta is the place for sunworshippers wanting peaceful and friendly surroundings. It is a treasure trove of arts, history and stark beauty out of all proportion to its size. The Maltese islands, situated in the Central Meditterranean 100km from Sicily and 290km from North Africa, consist of Malta (390 square km), Gozo (65) and Comino (2.5).
Malta's Clear Blue Sea

CLEAR BLUE SEA

Malta has no mountains or snow or medicinal waters, but it does have sunshine in abundance and a clear blue warm sea besides its historical attractions. For sure, these are assets that make it well suited for a tourist resort.
Comino's Blue Lagoon

COMINO ISLAND

The tiny isle of Comino, only 3.5 km2, is the perfect hideaway. Romantically named after the cumin herb once grown here, Comino is the perfect retreat. Carefree and a water sports paradise.

Here, the colours of Malta are at their most vivid. The Islands’ main attraction is the Blue Lagoon, a sheltered inlet of shimmering aquamarine water over white sand and a popular day trip by pleasure and sail boat. The Lagoon is excellent for snorkelling. Linger on Comino once the day trippers leave, and you’ll find yourself on the ultimate in secluded islands. As the sun sets, Comino will seem your notion of a typical desert island.
Comino is worth a visit all year round. In winter, it is ideal for walkers and photographers. Without urban areas, or cars, you can pick up the scent of wild thyme and other herbs. Cumin still grows here, self-seeded from the time it was cultivated. With the clear warm seas, water sports enthusiasts will find Comino paradise. The isle has some excellent dive sites.
Comino has 3 little sandy beaches and is surrounded by glorious ultramarine waters. The waters of the Blue Lagoon, between Comino and Cominetto, are irresistible- especially if you get here early in the day, before the cruisers and yachts arrive from Malta. The seabed here is covered with sand which reflects the sunlight so that the waters take on a glorious turquoise hue.The superb Blue Lagoon is not only excellent for swimming but also one of the most wonderful sights of the Maltese Islands.
This is important if you consider shopping while you're in Comino as it's not that much possible. There's no shops except hotel boutique.
Only 2 hotels, both 4-star, low-rise casual hotels if considering accomodation for a long stay on the isle of Comino.
