Bardolino is a village on the shores of Lake Garda and it is very famous for its wines. In the Bardolino production zone, the vine has been cultivated since the Bronze Age, as has been established by the discovery of fossilized grape seeds in the remains of lake dwellings built on piles at Peschiera, Lazise, Cisano, Pacengo and Bor.
The name, which is clearly of Germanic origin, could be derived, as legend has it, from Bardala, daughter of King Axuletus and grand-daughter of Mantus, founder of Mantua. The tale was originally told by the Latin poet Virgil and later included in the Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri.

BARDOLINO is a spruce little resort, popular with British and German visitors, which is, as you might have guessed, the home of the light, red Bardolino wine - the town is at its most animated between mid-September and mid-October, when the Festa di Uva (Festival of the Grape) is held. At other times of year, apart from strolling along its lush palm- and pine-planted promenade, there's not a lot to do, although the church of San Zeno , tucked in the corner of a dusty yard just off the main coast road, is worth a brief look.
