  • Beautiful and astounding! Walk across for a different perspective. The bridge takes you to the pretty town of Sausalito on the other side of the bay, and you can take the ferry back to San Francisco. Visit my travelogue for more images.

  • The Palace of fine Arts reminds me of Europe in another time.
I've never been to Egypt, but it reminds of some exotic far away land. Really extraordinary park that is so impressive to walk around. Very enchanting. Take time to check out the mansions that encircle the park, each with a unique style of revival architture. Visit my travelogue for more images.

  • North Beach is a mix of Italian restaurants, hippie coffee shops and yuppie cafes. Some how it all comes together to make a very vibrant and welcoming area. The restaurants and shops are uniquely decorated with lively colors and designs. Murals adorn the sides of buildings thourghout the neihgborhood. Lots of good Italian restaurants.

  • A great retreat from the city. Beautiful and filled with smaller gardens and couryards within the park. Some of the highlights are: The conservatory of flowers, a Victorian Greenhouse built in 1879 that has just been refurbished and re-opened last year. There's the Japanese Tea Garden which is lovely and tranquil, the Legion of Honor Museum, and the Strybing Arboretum begun as a WPA project which contains over 6,000 plant species. Plus horseback riding, tennis, golf
and picnic grounds. Golden Gate Park is larger than Central Park in New York City.

Fisherman's Wharf: Put your wallet away, and just walk around
  • Tip Rating:
  • San Francisco Fisherman's Wharf
  • Colorful and Touristy scene at
  • Fisherman's wharf
  • by pigletsmom
  • Send Photo to a Friend
  • Though Fisherman's Wharf is touristy, it's worth walking around. Though I would try to avoid the tour guide salesmen, the giftshops and the Ripley Believe it or Not Museum. The views of the water are nice, the food can be good, and the old cutter ships and submarine on view are interesting. I highly recommend the clam chowder sold in many of the restaurants. The Musee Macanique, (off the beaten path tip) is highly unusual and free. Walk west towards Ghiradellii Square and you'll run into the Maritime National Historical Park. (off the beaten path tip) Much more authentic and less touristy. Refer to my tourist Trap tip as well.

We are visiting SF in late Jan and have booked a place near Ghirardelli Square. We are hoping it is a great place. Tell me more about the MARINA and the places to go. 2 Australians.
