Brugge is really a beautiul town, but there are way too many tourists. I was there in October in the middle of the week, and I could hardly walk due to all the tourists. However the town is still lovely and worth a visit. You can take a wonderful canal ride around the city.
Walk away from the main square and touristy areas to find some lovely canals and streets.
All over the town are beautiful bridges and canals.
- Pros:Beautiful Historic city with lovely architecture
- Cons:Too many tourists and some of the locals are not very friendly
- In a nutshell:Worth seeing due to it's history and beauty

Thank you for your frankness re: Brugge. I've been thinking about planning a visit, but surprised to hear they are busy in Oct.! You would think it would quiet down after summer. hmmm, maybe I have to re-think some things.
I will also visit in October, and I also "hate" overcrowded places. Thanks for the advice about Gent.
Medieval? That means there might be some barriers because I use a wheelchair.
