My Journey to Dolores Hidalgo

Great town of Delores Hidalgo

Church in main square
About 45 minutes outside of San Miguel de Allende is this great town of Dolores Hidalgo. Not many tourists go there, but it is a definite MUST SEE if you have the time. Many prehispanic artifacts such as ceramics and stone instruments have been discovered in the area surrounding the city of Dolores Hidalgo.
Sept. 16, 1810 is the most important date in the history of the city. During the early morning of Sept. 16, 1810, Father Miguel Hidalgo y Castilla gave the "Cry for Independence" which began the uprising against the Spanish. The city became known as the "Cradle of National Independence." In 1940, Lazaro Cardenas was the first Mexican President to initiate the traditional "Cry for Independence" which takes place every 15th of Sept. in the atrium of the Parish Church of Dolores Hidalgo. A light and sound show is put on each Saturday at 9pm and displays highlights of the "Cry for Independence."

Shown here is the Parroquia de Nuestra de los Dolores (Our Lady of Sorrows Church)
This is a wonderful example of 18th Century architecture, carved in rose colored quarry stone. It is located across from the main square in town.

Don Miguel Hidalgo monument

This bronze monument was erected on Sept. 16, 1891 in honor of the Father of Mexican Independence, Miguel Hidalgo. The sculpture was designed by Miguel Norena, who was a sculptor and teacher at the School of Fine Arts.
