Beautiful but tourist mecca

The closest town to milford is Te Anau, driving to which is a fun experience, as tourist buses roar passed you travelling the opposite way. Milford Sound is about an hour or so drive away from Te Anau, and the road is very harrowing for the unexperienced driver! it is very windy and not much fun as your hands are in white knuckled terror as you grip the wheel while your passenger gets to enjoy the sheer cliff drop views. Homers tunnel is an experience in itself. I have repressed my memory of it.

Anyway, by the time you get to Milford Sound, the beautiful scenery makes up for the nightmare drive (maybe). Mountains and sharp peaks seem to grow out of the bay and waterfalls cascade down their sides.

Unfortunately, the drone of constant aeroplanes taking people on scenic flights kills the peaceful mood of the place, but if you sell your soul to tourism and go on a boat ride down the sound, the noise of the howling wind drowns it out. And you get to enjoy the scenery.

Pros and Cons

Pros:Breathtaking scenery, beautiful waterfalls and forests
Cons:Tourists!! tourists, tourists, tourists!
In a nutshell:Beautiful, but if I were a maori I would be very resentful.

the touristy stuff is bearable, but the Sandflies....buggers
