At the base of the Spanish Steps is a road filled with upper-level shops (IE Gucci, Prada, etc)... Its ALSO filled with very clever theiving gypsies. We went when the road wasnt too crowded, thinking if we payed attention we would be ok. The only one who got close to me was a boy about 10 or 11 years old, yet he managed to get into my backpack (unzip it and all) and get my digital camera without me noticing. There are young women who dress as elderly, hunched over begging. If you stop to give them money often someone passes by and lifts your wallet while youre distracted. The same goes with the gypsy mother who asks you to hold her child. While youre busy with the child theyre busy taking your valuables. I dont like to stereotype like that, but use extreme caution. The locals do, so remember, "When in Rome..."
