Cabo San Lucas Warnings Or Dangers
Sort by: Most Recent | Best Rated | Author's Order

Swimming: Don't Swim on the Pacific Side
  • Tip Rating:
  • Please do not swim at the Pacific Ocean beaches in Cabo. People drown there every year and many others still do not listen to warnings. The undertow is terrible, and the waves can throw you against the rocks. The Mexican authorities do not like pulling bodies from the water. If you go to a beach on the Pacific side, lay in the sun or check out the rock formations, even if you are an experienced swimmer.

The beaches on the Sea of Cortez side are very safe most of the time and beach conditions are posted at most hotels.

Drinking Water: Don't Drink the Water
  • Tip Rating:
  • We all hear the jokes about Montezuma's Revenge. No, its not funny when you get it. It is best to be careful when drinking the water in Mexico.

When you go to a restaurant, ask for bottled water. If you order something with ice in it, you are taking a risk.

Some resorts have water filtration systems on their property, so ask to see if it is safe before you drink their water.

Time Shares: Getting Sucked In for Time Shares
  • Tip Rating:
  • I have a timeshare here. It is great and I love it. But I will warn you - if you are not serious about buying a timeshare, don't get sucked in by the people offering 90 minute tours of timeshares for sale.

Why? Its NEVER 90 minutes! Sure, the free breakfast is great, but do you really want to waste your time walking around and seeing how great the ceramic tile in the bathroom is when you would rather be on the beach or snorkeling or walking around town?

The bottom line is that you will lose a half day of sun and beautiful weather. Too many people who didn't want a timeshare or weren't sure have come out of the showings disappointed at all the time they wasted. Enjoy your vacation! If you want nothing to do with timeshares, tell them you already own one.

    Boating: No Propina?
  • Tip Rating:
  • Locals will try to be very helpful unloading your things from your water taxi at Lover's Beach. Unfortunately, they do not work for the taxis and will hit you up for a tip as soon as you get off the boat. I found it very annoying and got a little mad at the guy that was playing with my camera. Just a warning so they don't catch you by surprise.

I happened to bring my wallet, and only had one US dollar with me, so after I gave it to the one guy, the other "helper" approached me for another $1. I was carrying Canadian, so I went to give him a Canadian $5 which is worth more than US$3. He said "sorry no Canadian". This shocked me and I am still in disbelief as to why he wouldn't take triple the tip. So for those of you on the frugal side who don't want to hand out tips in Cabo, take Canadian money with you. (No offense, Canada)
