Purdue University | Ross-Ade Stadium, Nov 2000 |
I spent 4 years of my life at Purdue University here and return every football weekend to watch Purdue play. It is a small, comfortable city with a great college atmosphere. Hey, we might not be the #1 party school in the nation, but Purdue ranks among the top engineering, agriculture, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, hospitality and tourism, and management schools in the world, with plenty of other high-ranking programs. We also put the first and last man on the moon (Neil Armstrong and Gene Cernan) and boast 22 astronauts, the most of any public university, which is why we have the nickname "Cradle of Astronauts". The legendary Amelia Earhart was a professor here. The Wizard of Westwood, John Wooden, got his start playing hoops for the Boilermakers, winning a national championship in 1932. The designer of the Golden Gate Bridge, Charles Ellis, was a Purdue professor. Purdue also invented the marching band formation, and had the first university-owned airport. Purdue was founded in 1869. |
| | What to do There are plenty of things to do here, like take a walk on campus and see the beautiful buildings and scenery. There are also plenty of good quality college bars, and decent places to eat besides the usual fast food found at all college campuses.
So what else is there to do? Purdue is a member of the Big 10 conference, so top-of-the-line sporting events happen all the time. Check a schedule before you go.
Just a few minutes drive east of West Lafayette is Lafayette. There is plenty to do in Lafayette also, so please check my Lafayette travel page for info (Coming Soon!).
Next time you are passing through Indiana on I-65, stop off at Purdue, have something to eat (or drink) and take a walk through one of the nicest campuses in America.
What I will try to do with this page is give a tour of the university and give a little feel of what Purdue is like. My pictures were taken in the dead of winter, so don't think Purdue is cloudy and gloomy all the time. I know I left out lots of buildings, but there are so many on campus that I can't possibly get them all. |
