Dubrovnik is one of the most beautiful seaside towns in the world. It is easy to see why Lord Byron called it "the pearl of the Adriatic". Its Old Town, surrounded by 5 forts, is the best complete walled city to visit. Walking through the narrow stone streets of Old Town is an experience that will never be forgotten. |
| | The history of Dubrovnik dates back to the 8th century when Greek refugees (or fugitives) from Epidaurus founded the town. Byzantine, Venetian, and Hungarian rulers once controlled it until it gained independence in 1382 becoming the Republic of Ragusa until Napoleon conquered the city in 1806. It was a rival of Venice in maritime trading. The name changed to Dubrovnik in 1918. Shelling by the Yugoslav army in 1991 left many scars on the Old Town which can still be seen today, but the town quickly rebuilt with help from the international community. Dubrovnik has since returned to become a major tourist destination and is growing more popular every year. |
| | I spent 3 days in Dubrovnik but was unlucky with the weather. It is a city that has sun for most of the year, but 2 out of the 3 days I was there it was cloudy and rainy. This didn't allow me to do everything I would have liked to do, so I guess it means I will have to come back. No complaints. |
