Nassau is the brightly colored capital of the Bahamas. It is located on the island of New Providence, which is only 21 miles long and 7 miles wide. About 140,000 people live in Nassau.

Nassau is a great tourist destination for those wanting to relax, sit on a beach, or shop. There are plenty of world-class resorts with beaches near the city, golf courses, an excellent selection of top-of-the-line stores to shop in, and the island offers the opportunity for some good watersports including fishing and diving. The nightlife is also very good.
Welcome sign
Nassau has plenty of historical sites and buildings along with some interesting museums for those who want some culture. There are also monuments and churches in the city.

Nearby and worth a visit is Paradise Island, home to one of the best and most well known resorts in the world, Atlantis (See my Paradise Island page for more). There are also a few other small islands off of New Providence Island.

Brief History of Nassau

The area that is now Nassau was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1492 and later given its name in 1688 after the king of Great Britain, King William III of Orange-Nassau. It was actually settled in 1656 as Charles Towne.

It has a great history beginning with the indiginous tribes, followed by Spanish explorers, British colonists and bands of pirates. The city later played important parts in the American Revolution and the Civil War. Independence was granted to the Bahamas on July 10, 1973.
