London on a shoe string, it really can be done! I found London to be a fascinating experience.
I was first stunned by the sheer expense of being there. Coming as I do, from Australia, the difference between the Australian dollar and the pound is a real killer.
But with a bit of thought and searching, you can actually have quite a decent time in London on the cheap. (It depends a bit, of course, on what your idea of a good time is) |
Various things struck me about the city of London. The first was that it is actually very small. Once you get in there, say to Victoria station, then a short walk will take you to a huge number of "sights". Take the underground maps with a grain of salt, it is often faster to walk between stations than to ride the trains. I expected that central London would be huge, far larger than Sydney, but in actual fact it isn't ... just a lot more crammed into the small space.
Various bus routes are perfect for the new tourist, to have a bit of a look around the city . The buses are frequent and there are good maps at the bus stops. |
